Victorian Football Association

Season 1886

Season Notes

Deciding the premiership

The premiership was decided by the Proportional Points system only from the 1888 season onwards (VFA Meeting 7 October 1887).

For the 1886 season the premiership was awarded to the team with the least losses.

New clubs

Port Melbourne, Footscray admitted. St Kilda application held over to next meeting due to an informality (VFA Meeting 12 March 1886)

St Kilda, Prahran admitted. South Williamstown held over to next meeting due to an informality (VFA Meeting 27 March 1886)

South Williamstown admitted (VFA Meeting 1 April 1886)

At a meeting of the Association held on 9 April 1886, Mr T. S. Marshall the secretary noted there were now 20 clubs represented on the Association.

Further to this: “In order to stop an indiscriminate rush of clubs on the association, several amendments have been made in the constitution.”

The 20 clubs consisted of the 14 Metropolitan clubs, Geelong, the three Ballarat clubs and two Horsham clubs.

The Horsham clubs confined their matches to their district and never contested the premiership.

Ballarat clubs

All games involving the Ballarat clubs, including those between themselves are listed here.

New rules introduced at the Intercolonial Football Conference held in Melbourne on 4 November 1885 (as reported in The Argus the next day)

1. Minimum size of playing ground is to be 150 yards long and 100 yards wide

2. Teams are to change ends at quarter time instead of half-time, the 10 minutes adjournment being allowed, however, at half-time only

3. "Marks" are not to count unless the ball has been kicked five yards. The alteration was adopted to stop the practice of passing the ball from hand to hand under the pretense of "little marks".

4. Pushing is to be allowed only when players are "running" within five or six yards of the ball instead of when in "rapid motion"

5. It is mandatory instead of optional for an umpire to allow free kicks for infringements of the rules

6. A penalty of a free kick will be awarded for wilfully kicking the ball out of bounds "at any time while it is in play"

7. The umpire is now required to award free-kicks whenever he sees a breach of the rules. Previously an appeal to the umpire was required for the umpire to award a free kick.

8. The prohibition on the wearing of gutta percha, spikes etc on football boots was rescinded, while "projecting nails" and iron plates are still tabooed.

9. It was decided that notice of the disbanding of clubs must be given to the secretary of the local association not later than the 15th of July to entitle the disbanded members permission to play with other clubs for the remainder of the season.
