This match was virtually the premiership decider. Essendon was returning directly from a tour of Tasmania, playing games there on August 23, 26, 29 and 31. Half the team arrived directly from Tasmania via Queenscliff, the other portion coming by special train from Melbourne. The game commenced at 4:00pm. "The Age reported: "Just as half-time was called Carter, of the Essendon team, marked the ball about five yards in front and sent it through, but it was not allowed.". The Argus reported: “The Geelong team had mustered what was admittedly the finest twenty ever sent into the field on behalf of the club.", and further: "The Essendon team were so manifestly unfit to play, that Geelong generously gave them another chance for the premiership by arranging a third meeting on the Corio Ground, to take place a fortnight hence.” (However this match did not eventuate).

Notes:

- Premiership awarded to the team with the ‘best record’.

- Proportional Points system (officially used only from the 1888 season onwards) correlates with most contemporary rankings.

- Where two teams are close on Proportional Points (less than 4.00 points separate) then head-to-head results are used to rank clubs:

      - South Melbourne played Carlton three times and won twice and drew once. Therefore South Melbourne rank above Carlton.

- Rule requiring a minimum of 18 games to qualify for the Premiership not in force until 1888

- Games involving Ballarat clubs are not included.

- Behinds were recorded but did not count towards the final score or in determining the result of matches.

- The percentage column of goals for divided by goals against is included as an indication only.

- Carlton vs Melbourne cancelled match not included in above table.

1882 premiers: Geelong
