Challenge Cup

Season 1875

Season Notes

Inclusion of matches

Only matches exclusively involving the senior metropolitan and provincial clubs (and not played at odds) are included.

Scores listed here

Only full-time scores are listed. Behind totals were rarely reported, so most games only have the final goal totals listed.

Senior clubs

Senior metropolitan clubs in 1875 were:

St Kilda merged with University at the end of June 1875, and was known as “St Kilda cum University” for the rest of the 1875 season.

Prior to the merge, St Kilda had played four games (one against a senior club), while University had played three games against non-Senior opposition.

Carlton Imperial and East Melbourne played their first season as Senior clubs in 1875.

Provincial clubs

Senior provincial clubs in 1875 were:

The Albion club of Ballarat was in existence from 1873 to 1877 and is separate club from Albion Imperial (formed in 1876) which went on to become South Ballarat.

Ballarat Imperial (formed 1875) was known as Ballarat Galatea in its first two seasons (1875 and 1876). It played no games with senior opposition in 1875 or 1876.

The Argus noted: "Throughout the game the North Melbourne team played very roughly and their style of play was a cause of much dissatisfaction among the Carlton team". Partly as a result of this game, in 1876 North Melbourne was unable to arrange fixtures with Carlton nor Melbourne and consequently did not field a team. Many of their players represented Albert Park in 1876, then played for the new Hotham club that succeeded North Melbourne in 1877.

Notes:

- Games played at odds, or against Junior clubs are not included in the above ladder.

- Provincial teams are listed separately from Metropolitan clubs, as was customary of this era.

- No official system was used at this time to rank teams

      - Therefore, the Proportional Points system (officially used only from the 1888 VFA season onwards) has been used to rank teams in the above table.

- Behinds were rarely recorded during this season. Games were decided by goals scored only, and behinds did not count towards the final score or in determining the result of matches.

- The percentage column of goals for divided by goals against is included as an indication only.
